Much of the history of Broxtead is included in the new book Sutton People by Greville Bickerton, as the life in the village of Sutton was dominated by the farms that now make up the Broxtead Estate.

The book is a village story of love, madness, stupidity, gentleness and compassion. Admirals, explorers, farmers, entrepeneurs and writers all pass through the village of Sutton. Briefly touching royalty, the aristocracy and politicians these villagers laid out, shaped and improved this unique part of England now classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
