Local Pubs, Restaurants and shops … a few recommendations…..
NEAREST SHOPS: Alderton Village Shop – turn left from the drive towards Shottisham. Turn right at the junction and follow the road to Alderton (about 3 miles). The shop is located in the village centre on your left hand side.
Melton Shop – head back towards Woodbridge and turn right at the lights – the shop is on the left or alternatively, turn left at the lights and another shop is to be found on the left hand side opposite Melton Playing Fields.
PUBS & RESTAURANTS:
The Sorrel Horse, Shottisham; this is your local! On foot – turn left from the Barns and right on the sandy crossroads. Follow the track and keep right when the track forks. Walk up the lane into the centre of the village and the pub is on the left. They are closed on Mondays. For large parties, pre-ordering is advised. 01394 411617
The Ramsholt Arms, Ramsholt; about 5 minutes in the car – turn left & head to Shottisham, then right at the junction heading for Bawdsey. After some farm barns on your right, take a right turn at the sign for the Ramsholt Arms, follow the road for 2 miles and you will find the pub located by the River. 01394 411229
The Oyster Inn, Butley; great in the winter with open fires, darts, locals, and home-cooking. 01394 450790
The Froize Inn, Chillesford – a must for foodies – book ahead. Head for Orford and Chillesford is on the way. Restaurant is on your right at the far end of the village. 01394 450282 for bookings.
Your nearest (and one of the best) cafés is the Boat House at Bawdsey (just before the quay on the left). Situated at the mouth of the River Deben and opposite Old Felixstowe,they serve great coffee and lunches whilst you sit on the balcony and watch the river traffic through their binoculars (closed in winter – see their website for opening times). A small Ferry service runs across the mouth of the river to Old Felixstowe every day in the summer. Visit the old-fashioned café there where they serve the best cooked breakfasts!
